Engineered Wood Market Expands with Rising Demand for Sustainable Construction Materials

The construction industry is undergoing a gradual transformation as developers explore alternatives to conventional steel and concrete. Mass timber has emerged as one of the most promising approaches, with products such as cross-laminated timber, glulam, and laminated veneer lumber enabling wood to be used in larger and taller structures.

The Engineered Wood Market is benefiting from this transition. MRFR identifies mass-timber building-code reforms as a major market trend, while CLT is the fastest-expanding product category, with a projected CAGR of 13.5% through 2035.

Cross-laminated timber is manufactured by bonding layers of wood in alternating orientations. This creates large structural panels capable of serving as floors, walls, and roofs. The technology provides architects with greater design flexibility while supporting factory-based construction processes.

Glulam is another important structural product. Made by bonding layers of timber into large beams and columns, glulam can provide strength and dimensional stability for commercial and institutional structures. Its use in large-span buildings and visually prominent architectural designs is creating additional demand.

Building-code reforms have helped expand the addressable market. As jurisdictions develop clearer standards for mass-timber construction, developers and engineers gain greater confidence in specifying engineered wood for larger projects.

Fire safety remains an important consideration. Modern mass-timber structures are increasingly supported by engineering research, fire-testing data, code provisions, and specialized design approaches. Continued collaboration between manufacturers, regulators, insurers, and architects will be important for further adoption.

The commercial sector represents a particularly attractive opportunity. Offices, hotels, schools, universities, healthcare facilities, and other institutional structures can incorporate mass timber into their structural systems while highlighting natural architectural aesthetics.

Prefabrication further strengthens the business case. CLT and other engineered wood products can be manufactured under controlled factory conditions and delivered to construction sites as precisely fabricated components. This approach can reduce on-site labor requirements and construction complexity.

North America is becoming an important growth region as building regulations increasingly accommodate taller mass-timber structures. Europe also has a strong foundation because of established timber construction expertise and sustainability policies.

Mass timber is therefore moving from a niche construction technique toward a more established building system. Continued code development, improved insurance models, greater contractor expertise, and technological innovation could substantially expand engineered wood's role in future commercial construction.
