The process of creating carbon fiber reinforced plastics, commonly known as CFK, is a complex process that has altered the engineering profession altogether. CFK (Carbonfaserverstarkter Kunststoff) is a super strong, stiff and a lightweight material which today finds a wide application in aerospace, car, and the sports equipment industries.

What Is CFK?

CFK is a composite material consisting of thin carbon fibers used in a plastic mat, typically an epoxy resin. What comes out is the stronger but far lighter material than steel. It is well suited to harsh conditions with its ability to withstand temperature and corrosion.

The Herstellung von CFK is a series of steps that require extreme accuracy to get maximum quality and performance:

  • Carbon Fiber Production: Starting with a polymer known as PAN (polyacrylonitrile). It is warmed under controlled conditions to extract all non-carbon elements and only pure carbon atoms are left in long and strong fibers.
  • Weaving the Fibers: The carbon fibers are then woven or overlaid in various fabric designs, based upon the strength and flexibility required.
  • Impregnation with Resin: Resin is then impregnated on these fabrics to form a so-called prepreg (pre-impregnated composite). The measure prevents uneven distribution and sticking of the fibers and the resin.
  • Shaping and Curing The prepreg is put into molds and cured with pressure and heat. This is the material that is hardened to create a light but very strong structure.
  • Finishing and Quality Control: Last, the trimming, polishing of the cured parts and quality tests are carried out. Accuracy in all processes assures that the final CFK product will be of the highest standards in the industry.
